Baja California emergency services received a call on August 9 at 7:27 in the morning. The voice on the other end of the phone was from a farm worker who, near the ranch Rest, located at kilometer 55.4 of the highway that connects Tijuana with Ensenada, had run into a tragic scene: the bodies of two minors, a 1-year-old boy and a 3-year-old girl, with traces of blows and multiple wounds produced by a sharp object.

The heinous crime occurred on the main road of Rest, in front of the ranch Cardozo, near Primo Tapia, where later the members of the specialized prosecutor’s office found hematic lakes (pools of blood) and a stake covered with the same fluid in an area of undergrowth. The medical examiner of the State Attorney General’s Office determined that the male minor had abrasions (scrapes) on the face and arms, as well as 17 injuries from a sharp instrument at the level of the thorax. The minor also had abrasions on her face and arms, as well as 12 sharp instrument injuries.

The central prosecutor of Baja California, Hiram Sánchez Zamora, reported this Tuesday at a press conference that the elements of the state investigation agency that are handling the case had determined that the person responsible had been the father of the minors, identified as Matthew Taylor, 40 years old and of United States nationality.

A dog that I have was the one that took me to where the two little bodies were without life. I did not see what sex they would be, I withdrew, I did not want to see more and that was where I called 911 […] I did not see injuries or anything, I only saw that one was naked with his diaper and the other I only saw that he was in his underwear, but I did not see their faces”, Declared

The security cameras of the City Express Hotel, located on the Tijuana-Ensenada free highway, in the municipality of Rosarito, revealed that on August 7, at 8:00 p.m., Taylor, accompanied by the two minors, registered with a driver’s license from the state of California (USA).

Those same cameras captured the American and the two minors leaving the hotel at dawn on August 9. The authorities assume that he drove 29 kilometers to reach the neighborhood access of Rest. Presumably, when he was at the entrance to the ranch Cardozo, descended and injured the minors at first. Then he took them to another point, approximately 10 meters from the first, where he injured them again and finally deprived them of life.

Sánchez Zamora explained that due to the cadaveric rigidity, the experts determined that the first to lose his life was the minor, and later the girl. For his part, the subject returned to the hotel, but only remained there until 9:37 a.m. After doing the check out, Matthew Taylor pretended to enter the United States but He was detained by border agents at the San Ysidro port of entry, according to Baja California authorities.

“We already have contact with the people of the consulate so that the relatives can come closer, recognize the two corpses and be handed over to them so that they can proceed to their transfer to the United States and their burial.”Confirmed Hiram Sánchez.

The first investigations of the case showed that Taylor ran the Lovewater Surf Co., a surf school based in Santa Barbara, where he was born. According to the surf school’s website, Taylor earned a Master in Spanish from the University of California at Santa Barbara. He completed his undergraduate studies at Point Loma Nazarene University in San Diego, where he was part of the surf team.

Santa Barbara Police (SBPD) reported that a woman had reported the children and her husband as missing on August 8 and was concerned for their well-being. “During the investigation, the Santa Bárbara Police obtained evidence that the father and the two children had possibly traveled to Mexico”According to the SBPD statement.
