More than 100 members of the European Parliament have reportedly written a letter to UEFA on Wednesday calling for the exclusion of Belarus from Euro 2024 qualifying, selon Politico. The American media would have obtained the letter in question in which the members of Parliament explain that a participation of the country in the European championship “will later be used by Lukashenko and his propaganda team to prove that he is well perceived by the international community”.
Alexander Lukashenko, at the head of Belarus since 1994, has already been the subject of sanctions from the European Union because of human rights violations and the violent repression exerted by his regime against the opposition. Moreover, the politician with five re-elections at the head of the country has given his support to Russia since the beginning of the war in Ukraine. A position which had already earned a sanction from UEFA, the country no longer being authorized to host international matches, but unlike Russia, Belarus is still authorized to participate in international competitions. The selection is also preparing to face Switzerland and Romania on March 25 and 28.
One competitor less for the Blues.
