Russian forces continue to press into the siege of the eastern Ukrainian town of Bakhmut. There is also fighting in the outskirts of the city, in the settlement of Chasiv Yar. Ukrainian convoys are passing by heading inside the city to fight, a soldier tells the Reuters correspondent as he walks into the heart of the fighting he is confident: “We will not surrender, we will hold the city to the end”. The capture of Bakhmut, the scene of some of the bloodiest battles of the war, has become pivotal for Russians seeking a symbolic and practical victory because it would pave the way for the capture of the last remaining urban centers in the Donetsk region, one of four that Moscow says to have annexed in his ” special military operation” in Ukraine.
