Good news for Portugal fans: after exactly 318 days, people in the popular holiday destination no longer have to wear mouth and nose protection on the street, in parks or on the beach promenade.
On Monday, the mask requirement that had been in place outdoors since the end of October 2020 came to an end in the wake of the good development of the corona situation. However, many people continued to wear protective masks on the streets of the capital Lisbon and other cities. They followed the recommendation of Health Minister Graça Freitas to exercise caution with larger gatherings outdoors.
Spain has also relaxed the mask requirement
After the summer high of around 438, the 14-day incidence in Portugal recently fell to 240. The restrictions are therefore being relaxed more and more. But one is much more cautious than, for example, in Spain, where the number of infections is also falling rapidly and the requirement to wear a mask outdoors was lifted two and a half months ago.
For more than a year, residents and tourists had to wear a face mask.
Unlike in the neighboring country, in Portugal, for example, to visit the interior of many facilities, proof of vaccination or recovery or a negative test must be presented.
Only in a few countries was the vaccination campaign as successful as in Portugal. Around 80 percent of all 10.3 million citizens there are already fully vaccinated. Citing the government of Prime Minister António Costa, the newspaper “Público” reported on Monday that by the end of September the 85 percent mark would be reached with certainty. 84 percent of all twelve to 17-year-olds had already got the first stitch, it was said.
