Prior to his clash against Rune, Matteo said he was fit and ready to go all the way in the tournament. However, during the night he realized how different his level of tennis was from that of a player as quick and agile as Rune.
After losing the first two sets 0-6 and 0-1 respectively, Matteo opted out of the match, even though he hadn’t sought medical help until then. He only won 7 out of 35 points, and it seems he preferred to end the carnage. The Mexican public did not react favorably to his abandonment and expressed their displeasure by whistling him. It only remains to be hoped that the reasons for his withdrawal will be justified to ease the restless spirits who witnessed what should have been an epic match on the crowded center court.
