The 37-year-old former Bayern Munich and Real Madrid player said it was a tough decision, but one that was realistic.
“My heart wants to continue, but my body has not given me the confidence needed,” Robin was quoted by Reuters in a statement on Thursday.
Robben suddenly returned to the stadiums when he signed a one-year contract with his childhood team Groningen, and one year after retiring after winning the German League title for the eighth time with Bayern Munich.
But Robben’s participation in the Eredivisie was limited to limited matches due to new injuries.
Robben started his career with Groningen at the age of 16 in 2000 and then moved to Eindhoven for two years before joining Chelsea in 2004.
Robben won 12 league titles during his busy career and played 96 matches with the Netherlands, including the 2010 World Cup final when his country lost to Spain in Johannesburg.
