LondonSome people might be able to fight off the coronavirus better than others. A recent study published in the journal Nature provides indications of this. According to this, some people could eliminate an impending corona infection with the help of certain T memory cells so quickly that a rapid or PCR test would be negative. Ideally, according to the study authors, these people might even produce antibodies to the virus.

The researchers think it is conceivable that these memory T cells were already produced by known coronaviruses – i.e. before the pandemic. These coronaviruses usually only caused one cold. The study states: “Probable candidates for the source of pre-existing T cells, the cross detection of SARS-CoV-2 are previous infections with closely related human endemic cold coronaviruses (α-HCoV 229E, NL63 and β-HCoV HKU1, OC43). “

Study: Nearly 60 Healthcare Workers Who Have Never Been Corona Positive

The British researchers suspect the following, based on analyzes of blood samples that almost 60 health care workers are said to have given at the beginning of the pandemic: Certain T cells could stop the coronavirus by creating a cluster of certain proteins – the so-called replication-transcription complex – Deactivate, which is jointly responsible for the multiplication of Sars-CoV-2.

The special thing about the employees: Although they were exposed to an increased risk of infection due to their work and even colleagues are said to have become infected, they apparently never tested positive even four months after being included in the study. In addition, they should not have produced any antibodies against Sars-CoV-2.

New knowledge for vaccines?

With a view to the replication-transcription complex, the scientists also give hope for new findings for vaccines. While spike proteins with which viruses penetrate the cell differ from virus variant to virus variant, according to the researchers, the proteins in the said complex are the same in many coronaviruses. Accordingly, vaccine producers could orientate themselves on these proteins in order to be able to develop vaccines to combat as all coronaviruses as possible, it is said.

However, it is still too early to be able to break off a corona infection for unequivocal statements about the performance of individual bodies. There are still too many reservations about the results, the scientists admit in Nature. The data also do not show that a cold protects against illness. The scientists expressly warn against such conclusions.

Scientists not involved in the study also appear to object to the lack of definitive evidence that the health care workers who allegedly eliminated the virus actually had Sars-CoV-2 particles in their bodies.
