Apple employees in the US state of Maryland organize themselves into a union for the first time
Towson. Employees at an Apple branch in a suburb of Baltimore want to organize in a union. Workers in Towson, Maryland, voted 65 to 33 on Saturday to join the mechanical engineering and aerospace industry union, according to the labor organization IAM. The result of the vote could not be immediately confirmed by the Federal Office for Industrial Relations, which has to recognize the election.

The technology group Apple did not want to comment on the election when asked by the AP news agency. The IAM union and Apple employees who wanted to join said they informed CEO Tim Cook of their plans last month. The statement said their motivation was to seek rights they currently do not have. In addition, workers have recently formed the Core (Coalition of Organized Retail Employees) group to represent their interests.

“I applaud the courage of the core members at the Towson Apple Store in achieving this historic victory,” said IAM International President Robert Martinez. “You made a great sacrifice for the thousands of Apple workers across the country who had all eyes on this election.” He urged Apple to respect the election result and give unionized workers the opportunity to quickly sign a contract for the Closure of Towson site.

Can Apple still take the wind out of the sails of the campaign?
It remained unclear what steps would follow the vote in Towson. Labor experts said it is not uncommon for employers to drag out the negotiation process to thwart union campaigns.
The IAM describes itself as one of the largest and most diverse industrial unions in North America. It represents approximately 600,000 current and former members from the aerospace, defense, airline, rail, transportation, healthcare, automotive and other sectors.
Similar efforts to organize workers have been voted on across the country in recent months, not all of which have been successful. Workers at an Amazon warehouse in New York City voted to unionize in April, the first in the online retailer’s history in the United States. However, workers at another Amazon warehouse on Staten Island overwhelmingly opposed such a move last month. Workers at dozens of Starbucks coffeehouses in the US have also voted to organize in recent months.
