In less than a year and a half, the World Cup will take place in Qatar. But the criticism of the tournament is growing. German chancellor candidates have also already positioned themselves.
The political closeness of the Gulf emirate of Qatar to the Afghan Taliban has further intensified criticism of the host country of the 2022 World Cup. The Chancellor candidate of the Greens, Annalena Baerbock, spoke out in favor of canceling the controversial tournament in autumn 2022.
“If you continue to support the Taliban in this way, if you continue to contribute to human rights violations in this massive way, we will not be able to play football with you anytime soon,” said Baerbock on Sunday in the ARD summer interview. For some time now, Qatar has been accused of supporting the radical Islamic Taliban, who quickly regained power in Afghanistan.
“Qatar is not a good place for a soccer World Cup”
The CDU chancellor candidate Armin Laschet is also against a World Cup finals in the Gulf emirate, which has been heavily criticized for years because of human rights violations and numerous fatalities among foreign workers, not only on the World Cup construction sites. “I would not have done it in Qatar. I think Qatar is not a good place for a football World Cup,” said Laschet on “Bild” TV.
Regarding the possible withdrawal of the World Cup host role by the world association Fifa, the CDU federal chairman said: “The question is not decided by politicians.”
However, this step is considered highly unlikely, all signs at Fifa indicate that the 2022 World Cup will take place in Qatar – despite international opposition from politics.
