NEW KENT COUNTY, VA (WRIC) – All 60 Highway lanes in New Kent County, Virginia have been closed in both directions due to a spilled semitrailer.
The accident occurred around 2:50 pm. on the bridge between White Oak Road and New Kent Highway. All eastbound and westbound lanes were closed in this section.
According to the Virginia State Police, the dump truck – driven by Andrew Gurley, 20, from Charles City, Va. – was traveling with the raised truck tray. When the truck preceded on the Chickahominy River bridge, it tipped over, causing the truck body to tip over the jersey wall.
About 23,000 pounds of agricultural lime were lost, said VSP. There is also damage to the power line on the side of the Henrico County Bridge.
Gurley was transported by ambulance to a local hospital for the treatment of minor injuries. The charges are pending.
The Department of Environmental Quality and Virginia Dominion Power have been notified. Several law enforcement agencies have also responded to the accident, which is still under investigation.
According to the VDOT, drivers were "strongly encouraged" to use alternative routes until further notice and to expect delays in the evening rush hour. Traffic is redirected to White Oak Road, delays continue.
