The fall at the 2022 Supersport World Championship meeting in Estoril has serious consequences for Niki Tuuli. The MV Agusta ace had fractured his feet.
The Superbike meeting in Estoril was exciting, but also full of crashes and serious injuries. One of the pilots who fell was MV Agusta pilot Niki Tuuli, who fell on a wet track during warm-up and fractured several toes. The Finn was operated on the same day and seemed to have gotten off lightly. But this was not so.
Because the foot got caught in the chain during the fall, the tissue was badly damaged in addition to the fractures. The circulation was disturbed and could not be restored: Last Thursday, the 26-year-old had three toes amputated!
“In the first operation, the toes were fixed with wires, but the damage was so bad that they died. Unfortunately, in a second operation, the three affected toes were amputated. The phantom pains are severe,” Tuuli wrote on social media last Sunday, a week after his fall.
Tuuli is still in the University Hospital in Lisbon. He will be able to start his journey home on Wednesday at the earliest. Participation in the meeting in Misano on 11./12. June is unthinkable at the moment.
The fast Finn can take solace in the thought that two years after amputating all five toes on his left foot, Australian Daryl Beattie was having his best season in the 500cc World Championship – runner-up in 1995 behind Mick Doohan.
