Concept enables rapid, co-creative development of new packaging

With the opening of the innovative product development room STUDIOa at the company headquarters in Hard (Austria), the ALPLA Group is accelerating the market launch of new packaging solutions made of plastic. Customers are involved in the entire development process on site in just a few days, from the first design draft through the prototype to the finished packaging and receive everything from a single source.

3D printing, virtual and augmented reality, real-time cost control and optimal technical service: with the STUDIOa design center, packaging specialist ALPLA is taking product development to a new level. “The STUDIOa represents everything we believe in – great design, technical excellence and speed to market. This one-stop shop is the ideal space to work with our customers to develop innovative, safe and sustainable packaging solutions for the future,” explains ALPLA CEO Philipp Lehner at the official opening at the company’s headquarters in Hard.

With the innovative STUDIOa, ALPLA relies on the close integration of technology, product development and sales. “If we develop directly with the customer in the same room and the decision-makers are there, we shorten the development time, bring products to market faster and thus ensure a head start,” Norman Häusler, Director Corporate Product Development, is convinced.

Experience space for design
In the STUDIOa, interdisciplinary teams from ALPLA work on new packaging in several design sessions and workshops together with customer delegations. In addition to design experts, technical specialists from production, toolmaking and process technology also contribute their know-how. “In this way, the design is checked, optimized or adapted for feasibility and recyclability in the early project phases. That saves time and money,” emphasizes Häusler.

The room offers even more: A 3D printer delivers samples directly after design adjustments, virtual reality glasses provide an initial product preview and augmented reality (AR) simulates the placement of the packaging on the shelf.

Global product development
With seven technical centers worldwide, ALPLA promotes regional product development for local customers. The new design center STUDIOa in Hard follows the concept that has been successfully applied at the Atlanta (USA) location since 2015. A customer-focused development space was also opened in Toluca, Mexico in mid-2021. Another STUDIOa is currently being built in Shanghai.
