Friendly win against Greuther Fürth

Second friendly, second win for FC Basel under Alex Frei: Basel beat Greuther Fürth, who have been relegated to the Bundesliga, 3-2 on Saturday. Dan Ndoye scored two of the three Basel goals in the second half.

In the first half, the Baslers – and new signing Jean-Kévin Augustin on his debut – showed an appealing performance, seeing a chance for the Frenchman cleared off the line just before the break. And defensively, apart from a few individual mistakes, there is little to complain about. Coach Frei attributes the fact that he is 0-0 at the break to “solidarity in defensive behaviour”. “Fürth didn’t have a chance where you have to say it has to be a goal.”

In round two it looks a little different. After FCB, who replaced all eleven players once during the break, took the lead through Dan Ndoye, Fürth was able to equalize in the 64th minute after a mistake in defense. FCB quickly found an answer, two minutes later and thanks to Chalov to 2-1 and Ndoye again four minutes later to 3-1. In the end it was 3:2 because test player Jonas Adjej came a step too late shortly before the end.

Accordingly, Frei says after the game:

“As for the goals, we know why we got them. They weren’t collective mistakes, but I don’t want to blame them either.”

Frei, who focused on defensive work in the first part of the training camp, is very satisfied with this zone of the Basel game after the win. “The back four with the double six worked very well.” That it was then enough to score three goals against a Bundesliga team that had been relegated was not expected after not looking specifically at the offensive in training.

Despite this overwhelming majority of satisfaction, Frei points out a shortcoming:

“I expect more control with the ball and more dominance from my team. We didn’t have enough possession.”

Basel have the chance to do better in the next friendly next Thursday. On the way home from the training camp, FCB meet Botosani from Romania in Kematen in Tyrol on June 30th.
