At the executive meeting held on June 29, the Municipality of Albufeira approved a proposal by President José Carlos Rolo that resulted in the signing of a protocol with the GNR – Guarda Nacional Republicana, under which the municipality gives in on a lending regime , for a period of one year, renewable for the same period, two light passenger vehicles and two motorcycles, intended for patrolling the municipality. Motor vehicles will be assigned to the Territorial Subdetachment of Albufeira and motorcycles to the Territorial Post of Paderne.
The protocol, which was signed this Thursday, at the office of the mayor of Albufeira, aims to “strengthen the resources of the GNR in the municipality, in order to allow that security force to improve the effectiveness of its performance at the level of the prevention, defence, protection and security of populations, namely in policing actions, with a view to better preventing the security of goods and the physical integrity of citizens, whether they are residents or the countless tourists who choose Albufeira as a holiday destination”, explains municipality in a statement.
During the signing of the protocol, the mayor of Albufeira underlined “the importance of supporting the GNR in fulfilling its mission, bearing in mind that the resources it has are insufficient to meet the needs of the municipality, especially during the season bathing, when the population increases exponentially”.
José Carlos Rolo reinforces the arguments, adding that the populations of the interior often see their security decreasing due to the pressure exerted on the coastal area of the county. “We must not forget that in the interior there are very specific needs, related to the theft of dried fruit, support for the elderly and vulnerable populations, to which, especially at this time of year, the thefts from homes on the coast of the county are added , a situation that requires the reinforcement of means, namely vehicles, so that the security forces can help on all fronts, guaranteeing the security of the heritage and of the respective populations”, says the mayor.
Colonel Pedro Oliveira, commander of the Faro Territorial Command, who was accompanied by Captain Pedro Pereira from the GNR sub-detachment of Albufeira and other soldiers from the aforementioned security force, thanked the Municipality, represented by the Mayor and the councilors present there , the delivery of the aforementioned vehicles that “comes to increase the GNR’s response capacity, in an excellent institutional collaboration that will help us in the daily fulfillment of our mission”, namely with regard to the prevention and maintenance of public order, the fight against criminal offenses and the safety of people and goods.
In total, there are 32 vehicles currently in the service of the Albufeira GNR and each of these vehicles travels an average of 100 kilometers per day, and due to the overload of use, we usually have between 8 to 10 vehicles inoperative, explained the person in charge of GNR
“This reinforcement will help immensely, with the advantage of being completely new equipment and, in the case of light (electric) vehicles, of being environmentally friendly vehicles, which contributes to improving the image of GNR as a more modern force and with concerns for the level of environmental sustainability”, highlights Pedro Oliveira.
