Alberto Fernández spoke with Nicolás Maduro and promised to defend the presence of Cuba, Venezuela and Nicaragua at the Summit of the Americas

Last Friday from Havana, Nicolas Maduro tweeted from his account that something was already cooking.

He said that he took advantage of the platform of the Bolivarian Alliance for the Peoples of Our America (ALBA) to thank “the brave statements of the president of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States”Alberto Fernandez. And he said that “his firm voice (Fernández’s) will be one of the most powerful voices to question the exclusion and the attempted division of Latin America and the Caribbean.” And he sentenced “All our support!”

Official sources reported that Maduro and Fernández spoke last Thursday. That day Fernández also spoke with Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador. Maduro’s message on Twitter gave as a fact the promise made by the Argentine President that he would be the critical voice in the framework of the Summit of the Americas for the exclusion of Cuba, Venezuela and Nicaragua announced by the government of Joe Biden, who will host the inter-American meeting in Los Angeles, from June 6 to 10.

At this point, with all the plans that he has already devised and that he has also canceled, Alberto Fernández should confirm in the next few hours that he will attend the Summit of the Americas, in Los Angeles, from June 6 to 10.

Similarly, the President still hesitant to accept the invitation to the Summit that came to him a week ago and about which he spoke last Thursday at the Casa Rosada with Joe Biden’s envoy, Christopher Dodd.

Accepting the invitation will also mean fulfilling his promise to defend the presence in Los Angeles of the leaders of Cuba, Venezuela and Nicaragua against the president of the United States.

To this he promised not only with Maduro but with Andrés Manuel López Obrador, last Thursday. It was after Foreign Minister Santiago Cafiero passed through Mexico City.

The Government promised this Sunday a “Different integration discourse. With the need for all countries to be present” at the Summit of the Americas. As president of CELAC, Fernandez must now double-up Biden, López Obrador, and the Havana, Caracas, and Managua axis.

Biden decided not to invite the leaders of these three regimes. Technically, the measure is controversial because a country arrogates the right to whom it invites and who it does not invite to the summit mechanism where everyone should be. But he did it protected by the fact that there are three regimes without democracy, with political prisoners and a fierce repression of the opposition.

The decision that Biden continues to maintain unleashed an unprecedented rebellion in the region led by López Obrador and Fernández. The Mexican warned that he would not go if three countries were not invited to that -Bolivia and the allies of Caracas in the space known as CARICOM- also threatened with the same leadership. Alberto F. keeps thinking about it.

In recent days, the Government has been involved in a series of trials and errors. Alberto F. first devised a meeting of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) in Los Angeles prior to Biden’s Americas.

From the foreign minister’s office, Cafiero stated that “it would only be a breakfast or dinner” for the CELAC members present. They sought to deactivate the idea of counter-summit” already installed even in official media in Buenos Aires, Havana and Caracas.

From Mexico, Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard ruled it out and no country jumped on that idea. Furthermore, between comings and goings, Dodd passed through Brasilia and got Jair Bolsonaro to confirm that he was going to give a present at the Summit of the Americas. Being a friend of Republican Donald Trump, now the Brazilian will maintain his first bilateral relationship with Biden.

In dialogue with journalists on Saturday, López Obrador recounted his Friday conversation with Alberto F. He said they spoke “about the countries’ attendance” at the Summit of the Americas. And that the Argentine asked him a question, the content of which he did not reveal, but he did say that there was an agreement “not to hold a parallel summit in the United States, but In the event that it is not accepted to invite all the countries, he (Alberto Fernandez) as president of CELAC, speaks that we do not agree with the exclusions”.

This Sunday, the site of the journalist Horacio Verbitsky, El Cohete a la Luna, gave details of what would have been a tense meeting between Alberto F. on Thursday with Christopher Dodd and Ambassador Marc Stanley.

Clarion in Washington he asked the opinion of the idea of the counter-summit in the State Department as well as in the White House. There were no comments.
