agreement in principle to form a government between the Socialists and Podemos

They had failed to agree a few months ago. The Socialist Party of outgoing head of the Spanish government, Pedro Sanchez, and the radical left-wing group Podemos have sealed an agreement in principle to form a coalition government, the two political leaders announced on Tuesday (November 12th).

A government composed of these two formations will however require the support of other forces to be invested by the Chamber of Deputies from the legislative elections on Sunday. If it is invested, this government will end months of political paralysis in the fourth economy of the euro area.

"We have reached a pre-agreement to form a progressive coalition government (…) combining the experience of the PSOE (Spanish Socialist Workers Party) and the courage of Podemos" and who will "The best vaccine against the extreme right" of Vox, said the number one Podemos, Pablo Iglesias.

The joint program and the distribution of posts will be fixed in " the next weeks ", he added. "It's an agreement for four years, for the legislature"said Mr. Sanchez.

The Socialists and Podemos have together 155 deputies while the majority of the room is set at 176 votes out of 350.

The Socialists hope to secure the support of the liberals of Ciudadanos, who collapsed on Sunday and now have only 10 deputies against 57 at the end of April, and other small parties, which would allow them not to depend on the Catalan separatist support, with 23 seats in Parliament.

The PSOE and Podemos had failed to agree to form a joint government after the last elections in April, which had made it inevitable to convene new legislative elections on Sunday.
