An armored truck has dropped a large amount of money on a highway in the town of Carlsbad, in California, United States, causing a traffic jam as several drivers abandoned their vehicles to try to collect the bills.

The authorities have warned that people who have taken money must return it within 48 hours or face “a possible criminal charge,” according to the US network NBC.

The California Highway Patrol (CHP) and the FBI are investigating the incident, and have warned that several videos posted on social networks show the faces and license plates of the drivers who came to get the money.

“Most of the drivers immediately returned the money to the agents; however, drivers have been observed fleeing the scene with stolen money,” the agencies have warned in a joint statement.

The Highway Patrol has thanked those who have returned the money and asked those who have not yet done so to “do the right thing.”
