The national ice hockey team wins the first friendly against Latvia 5-2. After a good start third, the Swiss build in the meantime.

In the first third, Switzerland headed for an undisputed success against Latvia. Dominik Egli (3rd) with a wonderful shot and Enzo Corvi (7th) and Calvin Thürkauf (16th / Powerplay) with two deflectors rewarded the national ice hockey team for their dominant performance.

With a 3-0 lead behind them, however, Patrick Fischer’s favorite team lost from the second half. The Latvians promptly came into play better in the first friendly duel in Weinfelden.

Thanks to two power play goals, the guests were able to reduce the score to 2:3 in the 45th minute: First Janis Jaks scored with a clean shot (35th), then Nikolajs Jelisejev scored the goal (44th). Goalie Sandro Aeschlimann was able to prevent the equalizer with a few saves.

5th goal falls with the final siren

The Swiss were in danger of losing their wages after the strong start. But in the final phase they were able to go one step further: In the 57th minute the disc landed on the power play via detours at Killian Mottet, who defeated the Latvian goalie between the legs to make it 4:2.

Literally with the final siren, Simon Le Coultre ensured the final score with an empty netter. With this, the national ice hockey team won their 4th victory in the 5th test game in view of the World Cup.

Here’s how to proceed

The second duel against Latvia continues on Sunday. Next week, the national team will be heading north, where they will start preparing for the World Cup on May 5 as part of the Beijer Hockey Games. Switzerland will play its first World Cup game on May 14 against Italy.
