The group’s growth path will be continued continuously
Reinach (pts006/24.11.2021/08:00) – Total sales and EBITDA increase due to the development of new business areas, significant e-mobility orders and the recovery of aviation
The Montana Tech Components group of companies of the Austrian entrepreneur Michael Tojner can close the third quarter of 2021 with significantly higher results compared to 2020. The total turnover of the group (VARTA AG, Aluflexpack AG, Montana Aerospace AG) is 1.365 billion euros (+6.1% compared to September 30, 2020) and the EBITDA is 232.7 million euros (+23.6 million euros) %).
The main reasons for the good quarterly result are the higher sales of VARTA household batteries and energy storage systems, a consistently positive business development of Aluflexpack, a continuous expansion of the market share of Montana Aerospace, the recovery of the aviation sector from the COVID-19 crisis and a significant increase in sales in the E- Mobility.
Michael Tojner, majority owner and CEO of the MONTANA Group: “We are right on schedule with the results of the group of companies. Our strategy of countercyclical investments has paid off. We have not only mastered the COVID-19 crisis well so far, but it is and In addition, we succeeded in setting the course for the future of the industrial group. VARTA, Aluflexpack and Montana Aerospace are well positioned to continue to assert themselves as innovation and technology leaders in a competitive environment. “

Pilot production line for large-format lithium-ion round cells will start at the end of the year
VARTA AG’s group sales in the first nine months of 2021 were slightly below the previous year’s period and reached EUR 622.3 million (previous year: EUR 630.3 million). The adjusted group EBITDA is EUR 182.5 million and thus increases by 3.2% compared to the previous year (EUR 176.8 million). The “Lithium-Ion Solutions & Microbatteries” segment recorded a decline in sales of 5.9% to EUR 365.8 million (2020: 388.9 million) and “Household Batteries” achieved an increase in sales of 6.4% EUR 256.6 million (2020: EUR 241.2 million). The “Energy Storage Systems” division made a significant contribution to this with a high double-digit increase in sales compared to the same period last year. VARTA continues to invest in the expansion of its production capacities for lithium-ion batteries (CoinPower) and the construction of a pilot plant for large-format lithium-ion round cells. The construction work for the pilot line is on schedule. Pilot production will start at the end of the year. With the expansion of its infrastructure at the Nördlingen location, VARTA AG has now doubled its potential production capacities and thus has the infrastructure to be able to produce up to 400 million cells per year.
There is news in VARTA Management: Rainer Hald, Chief Technology Officer (CTO) of VARTA Microbattery since 2013 and VARTA Storage since 2016, has advanced to become CTO of the entire VARTA AG.
Coffee & tea, pet food and pharmaceuticals as sales growth drivers in the third quarter
Aluflexpack AG, which is listed on the SIX Swiss Exchange, achieved a sales increase of 10.2% to EUR 194.6 million in the first nine months of the 2021 financial year. Adjusted for the consolidation effects of the Polish subsidiary acquired in September 2020, organic net sales increased compared to Q1 -3 in 2020 by 6.7%. The growth in the third quarter amounted to 11.4% and thus accelerated compared to the first half of 2021. The growth was supported by an increase in business in the end markets of coffee & tea and pet food as well as a recovery in demand in the pharmaceuticals business.

Montana Aerospace AG
Takeover of the Belgian ASCO group and successful capital increase
After the IPO of Montana Aerospace on SIX Swiss Exchange in May 2021, the group is continuously implementing its ambitious expansion plan. The Belgian ASCO Group was successfully acquired in September 2021 and a capital increase was implemented in November, which brought gross proceeds of CHF 152.3 million. The net proceeds from the share placement will be used to finance more rapid organic growth and further M&A activities, in particular the ongoing takeover of the Asco Group, the completion of which still depends on certain conditions being met.
In the first three quarters of 2021, Montana Aerospace generated consolidated net sales of EUR 548.3 million, which is 14.1% above the previous year’s figure of EUR 480.6 million and around EUR 200 million above the half-year figures for 2021. The steady pace of sales growth on a quarterly basis reflects the steady growth in market share and the gradual recovery of markets towards pre-COVID-19 levels. The strong growth in aviation in the third quarter also reflects the positive dynamics of the market (+ 38% compared to Q2 2021 / + 50% compared to Q3 2020).
Adjusted for one-off and non-operational effects, EBITDA in the first nine months of 2021 reached EUR 43.0 million and was thus significantly above the level of EUR 38.5 million in the same period of the previous year. Adjusted EBITDA almost doubled in the quarterly comparison to Q2 2021 and thus underlines our goal of increasing EBITDA disproportionately to sales. Both the result (unadjusted + EUR 0.6 million) and the cash flow from current business activities (+ EUR 1.7 million) were positive – albeit only slightly – in the third quarter of 2021 and confirm the recovery in business.
The E-Mobility division was not only able to move from a negative to a positive margin and thus into the profit zone, but also recorded an increase in sales of almost 32% to a total of EUR 82.9 million compared to the same period in the previous year.
