According to data from the Costa Rican government, so far in 2023 there have already been 600 homicides. The highest number of murders in one year in the country is currently 656, so 2023 is expected to become the most violent year in Costa Rica.
Despite the fact that the Costa Rican authorities managed to reduce homicides in recent months, the trend reversed in August. Experts say that, if the average is maintained, the country could approach 900 deaths from violent causes at the end of the year, a previously unthinkable mark.
This increase in crime is attributed to the war between drug gangs for control of the territory and the transfer routes.
