Milan stock exchange falls after budget announcement

Argentina on Wednesday became one of the few Latin American nations to allow abortion, after parliament passed a law that deeply divides public opinion.

Already approved by the deputies on December 11, the text authorizing abortion up to 14 weeks of pregnancy was voted by the senators with 38 votes for, 29 against and one abstention, two years after the failure of a first attempt .

“It has become a law and it now passes into the hands of the executive”, welcomed the President of the Senate and former Head of State, Cristina Kirchner, at the end of a Homeric debate lasting more than twelve hours.

Thousands of people campaigning for abortion expressed their joy in front of Parliament, where only a few senators were present, most of them debating by videoconference due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

“After so many attempts and years of struggle that spilled blood and cost us lives, today we have finally made history. Today, we are leaving a better world for our children”, Sandra Lujan, a 41-year-old psychologist, who attended the vigil organized by abortion supporters told AFP.

Until now, abortion was only allowed in Argentina in cases of rape or danger to the life of the mother, under a law dating from 1921.

“A better society”

While the deputies had voted the text by 131 votes for, 117 against and six abstentions, the vote of the Senate, deemed more conservative, seemed far from certain.

In 2018, he rejected by seven votes a similar text in a country still very Catholic and deeply divided on the issue.

“This law does not oblige to abort, it does not promote abortion, it only gives it a legal framework”, Majority Senator Sergio Leavy said during the debates.

In power since the end of 2018, the center-left president Alberto Fernandez, who had promised during his campaign to resubmit the legalization of abortion to parliamentarians, welcomed this law establishing “a safe, legal and free abortion”.

“Today we are a better society which extends the rights of women and guarantees public health”, reacted the Head of State on Twitter.

“I am Catholic, but I must legislate for everyone, it is a very serious public health issue”, he had argued before.

Without direct reference to Argentina or the adoption of the law, Argentine Pope Francis said on Wednesday during his last general audience of the year: “Christians, like all believers, bless God for the gift of life. To live is above all to have received life. We were all born because someone wanted life for us ”.

“Inspiration”

Despite the pandemic, several thousand Argentines had gathered on both sides of Parliament to express their support or their rejection of the text, with many banners, music and giant screens broadcasting the debates live.

“Senators, it’s now!” could we read on the side of supporters of abortion. “We are saving two lives”, proclaimed opponents of abortion.

The Catholic Church and Evangelical Protestants, hostile to the text, had launched an appeal for “to unite to implore the respect and the care of the life to be born”, with a day of fasting and prayer.

“Today, Argentina has moved back several centuries of civilization and respect for the supreme right of life”, lamented Wednesday the Christian Alliance of Evangelical Churches (Aciera) in a statement.

Supporters of abortion, rallied around the color green, have carried out an intense campaign on social networks. In particular the Campaign for a legal, safe and free abortion, which brings together hundreds of feminist organizations, already very mobilized in 2018.

This law will serve as an “inspiration for other countries in the region and the world to advance in the recognition of access to legal and safe abortion,” said Amnesty International.

According to the government, between 370,000 and 520,000 clandestine abortions are performed each year in Argentina, a country of 44 million people, where 38,000 women are hospitalized for complications from clandestine abortions.

In an attempt to convince the senators to vote for the text, it included the possibility for doctors to assert their “conscientious objection”.

At the same time, another bill creates an allowance of “1,000 days” intended to support mothers during their pregnancy and the first years of the child, in order to reduce abortions for economic reasons.

With this text, Argentina joins Cuba, Uruguay, Guyana, Mexico City and the Mexican state of Oaxaca, the only ones to authorize abortion without conditions in Latin America.

Alcohol responsible for one in 20 deaths worldwide

Donald Trump opened the way on Monday for Sudan’s withdrawal from the American blacklist of states supporting terrorism, a turning point immediately hailed by Khartoum, which called for the lifting of this heavy sanction in force for nearly 30 years.

“Excellent news! The new government of Sudan, which is making real progress, has agreed to pay $ 335 million to US victims of terrorism and their families. Once paid, I will remove Sudan from the list of states supporting terrorism “, tweeted the President of the United States, without specifying a timetable.

“Thank you very much President Trump!”Sudanese Prime Minister Abdallah Hamdok immediately responded on Twitter. “We are on the verge of shedding the heaviest legacy of the late regime”, said the one who heads a transitional government since the fall of Omar al-Bashir in 2019.

The European Union also welcomed a decision “capital” who “strengthens integration” from Sudan “in the international community and its access to the world economy”.

The head of the American diplomacy Mike Pompeo had evoked in September a draft agreement providing for the payment into a blocked account of these Sudanese indemnities for the families of the victims of the attacks perpetrated in 1998 by the nebula jihadist Al-Qaeda against the embassies of the States -United in Kenya and Tanzania, which had killed more than 200 people.

Sudan, once an outcast of the international community for welcoming al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden in the 1990s, has been ordered to pay such compensation by the American courts.

According to the agreement, however, these funds will only be transferred to the complainants once Sudan has been removed from the blacklist. Mike Pompeo had said last month that this would happen “very probably” before the end of October.

“We urge Congress to immediately pass the legislation necessary to implement the agreement”, said Edith Bartley, spokesperson for the families of Americans killed at the Nairobi embassy. “This agreement cannot be a victim of blockages and quarrels by elected officials”, she said, while a handful of influential Democratic senators have so far expressed their reservations.

At the same time, Washington has stepped up pressure for Khartoum to normalize its relations with Israel before the US presidential election on November 3, as the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain have done in recent weeks.

The Trump administration, without denying this insistent request, ensures that no direct link exists with the lifting of sanctions, but several observers and media have reported the opposite.

On Monday, neither the White House nor Khartoum mentioned a possible Israeli-Sudanese agreement.

“Arab-Israeli peace”

Despite negotiations well advanced, Abdallah Hamdok had accused the United States on October 11 of endangering the democratization of his country, thus appearing to be annoyed with an American turnaround or delay.

Khartoum in fact ensures since last month to have collected the amount of compensation.

Sudan has been on this American blacklist since 1993, synonymous with hindering investments for this poor country.

The United States has reconnected with Khartoum already under former Democratic President Barack Obama, when Omar al-Bashir began to cooperate in the fight against terrorism and played the game of peace in South Sudan.

The revolution which swept away Omar al-Bashir only accelerated the movement.

The United States has “a single and narrow window to support the transitional government led by a civilian in Sudan, which has finally got rid of the Islamist dictatorship”, had written Mike Pompeo in a letter to senators in September.

The negotiations seem to have been complicated, more recently, by the Israeli dossier.

Abdallah Hamdok had showered American hopes, saying, during a visit by Mike Pompeo to Khartoum at the end of August, that he had “no warrant” to settle this sensitive issue.

The negotiations nevertheless continued behind the scenes with positions that were perhaps less rigid, and possible divisions on this thorny subject between civilians and soldiers.

General Abdel Fattah al-Burhane, head of the Sovereign Council in Sudan, had indeed met Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in February, before discussing in September with an American delegation of “role” from Sudan in “the future of Arab-Israeli peace”.

Alcohol kills 3 million people worldwide each year according to WHO | World | News | The sun

Dn a report on alcohol consumption worldwide and its harmful consequences for health, the WHO agency stresses that alcohol consumption kills more than AIDS, tuberculosis and violence combined.

Infectious diseases, traffic accidents, injuries, homicides, cardiovascular diseases, diabetes … 5.3% of deaths worldwide are linked to alcohol each year, according to the WHO.

Among the youngest (20-29 years), this rate reaches 13.5%.

In total, alcohol killed around 3 million people worldwide in 2016, compared to 3.3 million in 2012 according to the previous WHO report on the subject.

Three quarters of the deaths concern men.

The WHO notes that there have been “some positive global trends”, pointing to the reduction since 2010 in episodic drinking and the number of alcohol-related deaths.

But, experts say, “the overall burden of illness and injury from harmful alcohol consumption is unacceptable, especially in the European region and the Americas region”.

Over 200 illnesses are linked to alcohol consumption.

Of the 3 million deaths attributable to alcohol, 28% were related to traffic accidents, violence, suicide and other violent acts, 21% to digestive disorders and 19% to cardiovascular diseases. The rest of the deaths are attributed to infectious diseases, cancers, mental disorders and other health problems.

“It is time to do more to prevent this serious threat to the development of healthy societies,” said WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, quoted in a statement.

“Spectacular” decline in Russia

About 2.3 billion people worldwide drink alcohol, according to the WHO. Alcohol is consumed by more than half of the population on the American continent, in Europe and in the Western Pacific region.

Europe has the highest per capita consumption in the world, although this consumption has decreased by more than 10% since 2010. Alcohol consumption has decreased in three quarters of European countries, with very large reductions recorded in Russia, Modalvia and Belarus.

In Russia, for example, the annual consumption of alcohol (measured in liters of pure ethanol) per capita increased from 18.7 liters in 2005 to 11.7 liters in 2016.

This “dramatic decrease” is explained by the implementation by the Russian government of measures recommended by WHO, explained to the media Dr Vladimir Poznyak of WHO, citing among many others the introduction of a minimum price for vodka and the ban on the sale of alcoholic beverages at service stations.

WHO nevertheless predicts an increase in global alcohol consumption worldwide over the next ten years, particularly in the regions of Southeast Asia, the Western Pacific and the Americas.

The average daily consumption of people drinking alcohol corresponds to 33 grams of pure alcohol, the equivalent of 2 glasses of wine (150 ml each) or a bottle of beer (750 ml) or two ” shots “of spirits (40 ml each).

The increase in global consumption “will certainly lead to an increase in the number of deaths and suffering worldwide”, warned Mr. Poznyak, who notably recommends to international sports bodies, such as Fifa, to “end” sponsorship for alcoholic beverages.

Bought iPhone? Do these things with your new iPhone first!

iPhone purchased: your first steps

Before you can start working on a new iPhone, it is smart to see what has changed. You may have to get used to new swipes or return to the home button. And how do you take better pictures with your new camera? In this guide, you can read what to do if you just bought an iPhone and are about to unpack it.

Depending on whether you have ordered a new iPhone SE 2020 or just bought a separate iPhone 11 Pro, there are a number of things you can do right away. Because these devices are quite different from each other, we split this article into two parts.

Your first steps with your iPhone SE 2020

The iPhone SE 2020 has a traditional design, but that doesn’t mean you know everything through and through. There are still plenty of things you should do before heading out with the iPhone. Of course, it is wise to first transfer your data to your new iPhone, but after that there are some things you can try right away.

# 1 Choose your click
The iPhone SE 2020 has a home button, but one that cannot be physically pressed. The Taptic Engine simulates the pressure feeling, but you can choose how hard it is. The iPhone asks this when setting up, but you can always adjust this later. You can read how to do this in our tip about setting the home button vibration.

# 2 Get to know the buttons
Maybe you previously had a device without a home button and now you go back to an iPhone with a home button after a few years. Or is it your first iPhone? Either way, the home button allows you to close more than just apps. You open the app selector with it or you take a screenshot in combination with the side button. In our tip you can read how to get the most out of your iPhone’s buttons.

# 3 Set up your fingerprints
The iPhone SE 2020 has a Touch ID sensor, where you can set up to five fingers. In principle, this is intended for five of your own fingers, but you can also set a finger of someone you trust. Think of your partner or a family member. You can already set up Touch ID when configuring your iPhone, but you can set additional fingers via the settings. You can also name your Touch ID fingers so that you can easily recognize them.

# 4 Use AutoFill for passwords
Security above all else: it is really no longer necessary to create an easy-to-remember password for all kinds of services. Thanks to Autofill, you can automatically enter all passwords from the iCloud Keychain or one of the many password apps with your own fingerprint. So you log in securely to websites and apps and you don’t have to remember anything yourself.

# 5 Create or customize your first Memoji sticker
On the iPhone SE you cannot use animated Animoji and Memoji, but you can make your own Memoji as a sticker. If this is your first iOS 13 device, because you’re switching from an iPhone 6, for example, you probably don’t have one yet. You can use the Memoji stickers everywhere, in iMessage as well as in WhatsApp or another chat app. If you find them annoying, you can also disable the Memoji stickers.

Memoji stickers iOS 13.4.

# 6 Take a portrait photo and discover the camera
The iPhone SE 2020 is the first 4.7-inch iPhone with which you can take portrait photos, with both the front and rear camera. Keep in mind that this only works with people. Take a nice picture of your partner or if you are alone of course of yourself. With the different effects you can make something beautiful, especially if you are a bit creative.

# 7 Go wireless or extra fast charging
Although there is enough power in a freshly unpacked iPhone, it is always smart to fully charge it. If you come from a somewhat older iPhone, you can do this in two new ways: extra fast thanks to the iPhone fast charging and wireless with a suitable wireless charger. In both cases you will need some extra accessories: for fast charging, a Lightning to USB-C cable with at least an 18W adapter. For wireless charging, you can use almost any Qi charger, but there are differences.

Wireless chargers

# 8 Protect your iPhone SE with a case
Of course, you don’t want to damage your new iPhone SE immediately on the first day. If you want to err on the side of caution, you can always put a nice case on your iPhone SE 2020. If you previously had an iPhone 7 or iPhone 8, your old case probably also fits your new iPhone SE. But if you want to immediately take the opportunity to choose a new case, you will find some nice options from Apple in our article.

Your first steps with the iPhone 11 (Pro)

The iPhone 11 series has many advanced features not found on previous models. There is therefore plenty to try out immediately once you get there up & running are. You must therefore transfer your data from your old iPhone before you get started, although you can also start all over again. Also read our extensive list of 20 tips for operating the iPhone without a home button: all kinds of swipe and button actions that you must have in your fingers!

# 1 Learn the new swipes
Not everyone who has switched to an iPhone 11 has previously used an iPhone without a home button. If that’s the case with you, it means you have to get used to a few new swipes.

These are the main ones:

  • Back to the home screen: swipe up on the bar at the bottom of the screen.
  • Control panel: Swipe down from the top right of the screen.
  • Notification Center: Swipe down from the top of the screen.
  • Spotlight: Swipe down from the center of the screen.
  • Switch between apps: swipe left or right across the bar at the bottom of the screen.
  • Bring out the app switcher: Swipe left or right from the bottom edge.
  • Accessibility: Place your finger slightly above the bar at the bottom of the screen and swipe down.

# 2 Get to know the new side button
The iPhones without a home button have a new side button. This provides a slightly different operation, for example:

  • Siri: Press and hold the side button.
  • Take screenshot: press volume up and the side button simultaneously.
  • Accessibility: Press the side button three times.
  • Power off and SOS: Press and hold volume down and side button simultaneously.

Read more about using the side button in the tip below. And if you want to know more about the SOS emergency report, you can read it here.

# 3 Choose your Face ID settings
As soon as you start using your new iPhone 11 or iPhone 11 Pro, you will have to set up Face ID. During the commissioning of your device you will automatically see a screen to scan your face. This works quite easily: you get instructions on exactly what to do.

After that you can choose which iOS functions you want to shield with Face ID. One of these is, for example, logging in to apps and websites and automatically entering passwords (Autofill).

You can also set a second face for Face ID, for example for your partner, a confidant or yourself. Maybe you have glasses or you like a fancy dress party. Setting up a second face takes less than a minute.

Another thing to think about is whether to turn your attention to Face ID. If you switch it off, the function is less safe, but facial recognition is faster. We usually leave this enabled.

# 4 Use AutoFill for passwords
As we have already explained, AutoFill is ideal in combination with Face ID. You actually don’t have to worry about logging into websites anymore. You can enable AutoFill through the password and account settings. In Safari you then arrange the info and the correct contact info you want to use for this. You can have your credit card info filled in automatically. If you now go to a specific website, you will be asked if you want to save the password in the Keychain. It also works with password managers such as 1Password and Dashlane.

# 5 Create or customize your first Memoji
On the iPhone 11 series, you can use animated Memoji, funny characters that look like you. Try it right away in the Messages app or start a FaceTime conversation. It’s fun to put together your own Memoji, because you have a huge choice of hairstyles, accessories, noses, chins and floppy ears. Since iOS 13, you can customize many more things and even create and use your own stickers in other apps.

# 6 Adjust your screen settings
Because there is no home button on the latest devices, you can use Tap to Wake on the screen. So you don’t have to lift your device to let the screen turn on automatically. Instead, a light tap on the screen is sufficient.

Also adjust the settings for brightness, True Tone and Night Shift immediately if you want to use them.

iPhone 11 Pro green

# 7 Customize the Control Panel
You can customize the Control Panel yourself, and since you may be operating the iPhone 11 slightly differently, it may mean you have some other wishes and needs for the Control Panel. Add buttons for Screen Recordings, Do Not Disturb While Driving and the Home app, whichever you find convenient.

# 8 Discover the new camera
The iPhone 11 series has a completely new camera. On the standard iPhone 11, you will find an ultra-wide-angle lens next to the normal lens. The iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 11 Pro Max also have the telephoto lens. The ultra wide angle lens allows you to take wider photos. Apple has previously redesigned the Camera app with many new features. You can also take a slowfie: a slow-motion selfie with the renewed front camera. To use the new ultra-wide angle lens, just tap the .5 button while taking the photo. You will be amazed how wide the photos can be.

With the new night mode for the iPhone camera, you can also take the most beautiful shots in the dark. This is completely automatic. As soon as the iPhone sees that there is too little light, it immediately switches to night mode. You can recognize this by the moon at the top left.

# 9 Protect your iPhone 11 (Pro) with a case
The iPhone 11 (Pro) is made of glass, both on the front and back. That feels very different from the aluminum iPhones that you might have been used to before. It feels a bit more fragile – and if your device breaks down, it costs a lot. Therefore, make sure you are well protected with the iPhone 11 (Pro) cases that we discussed earlier. You could also consider a screen protector and AppleCare +.

Don’t have an iPhone 11 yet? You can get an iPhone 11 from your provider or buy a separate iPhone 11. Do you prefer the Pro? That is possible, because you can also get iPhone 11 Pro from providers or buy a separate iPhone 11 Pro. Also check our overview with the iPhone stock for current delivery times.

Director Peter Jackson, an increasingly embarrassing witness for Harvey Weinstein

Almost a year after the start of the Harvey Weinstein affair and the launch of the #MeToo movement, everything goes from bad to worse for the deposed producer. On August 20, a German actress lodged a complaint against the latter for a rape which allegedly took place in 2006. A new accusation which adds to the already long list against the distributor of The Artist in the USA. It is now one of his former collaborators who could turn against him.

Lawyer Ashley Judd’s lawyer, who filed a lawsuit in April against Harvey Weinstein for defamation, said at a Los Angeles court hearing Wednesday that he spoke with director Peter Jackson to encourage him to testify against the latest film mogul. Maître Théodore Boutrous hopes that the director of the saga Hobbit will reiterate what he said in December 2017.

The filmmaker then confessed in an interview to Stuff that the producer of his films, Harvey Weinstein, advised him in 1998 not to hire Ashley Judd to The Lord of the Rings, because it was “a nightmare to work with her”. According to the first interested, it is mainly a revenge because she would have refused his advances. She now believes that this choice “ruined her career”. Ashley Judd and Harvey Weinstein were not present during the hearing.

“We believe he will be a powerful witness and I will put him in front of Harvey Weinstein at any time of the day or night,” said the lawyer, who wishes to testify at the trial. According to him, Peter Jackson would have new information which could be favorable to the case of Ashley Judd. The actress was one of the first in October 2017 to publicly accuse Harvey Weinstein of sexual harassment.

For her part, Harvey Weinstein’s lawyer, Phyllis Kupferstein, requests that the complaint be closed without further action because she considers that there are not enough “facts” at present “to continue this trial in defamation”. Before the judge, she said: “Saying that someone is a ‘nightmare’ does not necessarily refer to that person’s professional abilities.” The judge has not yet made a decision. If Mr. Kupferstein’s request is denied, the trial could take place in a year.
