Stiftung Warentest: Most of the sunscreens for children “good”
According to a recent study by the Stiftung Warentest, a large proportion of children’s sunscreens protect “well” from the dangerous rays of the sun. However, there were also two “defective” sunscreen creams among the tested products, which do not offer adequate protection against UVA and / or UVB radiation. The results of the investigation will be published in the July issue of the magazine “test”.
“Children’s skin is sensitive” and “it needs a lot of protection from the sun’s rays”, the Stiftung Warentest underlines the importance of adequate sun protection. The UVB rays would cause sunburn and the UVA rays would cause the skin to age prematurely. In addition, both forms of UV radiation could cause skin cancer in the long term. Sunscreens for children should therefore have a particularly high sun protection factor. Here, however, it is crucial that the parents can rely on the information on the packaging. The Stiftung Warentest therefore checked whether the sunscreen creams, lotions and sprays for children do what they promise. The result: The sun protection factor of 30, 50 or 50+ on the packs was observed for almost all tested products. “Only sun milk fails with both UVB sun protection and UVA protection,” reports the Stiftung Warentest.
19 sunscreen tested for children
The foundation has currently tested a total of “19 sunscreens for children with a high and very high sun protection factor at prices of 2 to 23 euros per 100 milliliters”. Most of the waterproof sunscreens for children would have “good” protected from the sun, seven achieved the grade “satisfactory” and two were rated “poor”. Overall, Nivea’s sun milk Sun Kids was slightly ahead in the current test. However, significantly cheaper funds were able to achieve a similarly good result. These include the Cien sun spray for children from Lidl, the sun milk Sun Dance Kids from dm and Lavozon from Müller. As another relatively expensive product, La Roche-Posay sunscreen was rated “good”.
Two sunscreens deficient
The testers, however, could not convince the mineral sun milk from Avène and Ream Suncare sun cream, which are available, for example, from Kaufland and Mäc Geiz. According to the Stiftung Warentest, the Ream Suncare sunscreen for children only has inadequate UVA and UVB protection. In addition, the sunscreen is so tough that it is hardly possible to apply it to the skin. UVA protection was not sufficient for Avène sun milk. In general, it is important to apply the sunscreen generously and to apply cream regularly – “especially after every bath and when you sweat,” reports the Stiftung Warentest. This also applies to waterproof sunscreens. According to the testers, the “good” rated, examined products are also well suited for adults with very light or sensitive skin, given their high sun protection factor, especially since they do not contain any irritating fragrances.
The following also applies: avoid, dress, creams
Even though most sunscreens for children meet the requirements for the sun protection factor, the recommendations of the professional association of German dermatologists for adequate sun protection still apply. This generally recommends that the skin be exposed to UV radiation as little as possible. For example, stays in the direct midday sun should be avoided. In addition, the skin should be protected if possible with appropriate clothing. Sun hats for toddlers are a must here. Long-sleeved shirts and long trousers can also help protect the skin. If direct sunlight cannot be avoided, a sunscreen with a sun protection factor of at least 30 must be provided for children. (fp)
