1. FC Köln has a new managing director for sport. Christian Keller will take over the position on April 1, 2022 and work in a team with Thomas Kessler, Sporting Director of the Licensed Player Department, and Lukas Berg, Head of Administration, Licensed Player Department. Jörg Jakobs, who has been responsible for FC on an interim basis since June 2021, will then return to an advisory role.
“Jörg Jakobs, my fellow board members and I were able to look for a successor for the Managing Director Sport in the current constellation and we had time to hold intensive and good discussions. Christian Keller absolutely convinced us. We have extensively illuminated the path that we now want to take with him. After our selection process, I am firmly convinced that in him we have found an excellent football manager. His detailed analyzes and extensive specialist knowledge are really impressive, ”says FC Vice President Eckhard Sauren.
“The FC board of directors went out of their way to look after me. I was particularly impressed by the seriousness, reliability and professionalism of the FC managers. This basis of trust is extremely important to me because it is the only way to work together effectively. At the same time, the FC board of directors has a well thought-out strategic approach in order to actively shape the future of 1. FC Köln. It is also important to me, after around eight and a half great but also very intense years at SSV Jahn Regensburg, to approach the new role at FC with 100 percent identification and 100 percent commitment. To do this, I first need some space and a break. Even though I’m really looking forward to my start at FC in April 2022, I ask for your understanding that, beyond the announcement today, I will only be able to speak publicly again after I have started my job, ”says Christian Keller.
“We are delighted to have won a coveted manager for FC in Christian Keller. His outstanding achievements in Regensburg can be seen not only in the sporting results, but also in the structures that he has built up there. Its focus on sustainable development in the sports sector will also be good for FC, ”said FC President Werner Wolf.
Christian Keller (November 26, 1978) was managing director at SSV Jahn Regensburg from June 2013 to October 2021 and had both sporting and commercial-administrative responsibility. Under his leadership, SSV Jahn managed to march straight through from the 4th division to the 2nd division and has now established itself there. In economic terms, the 42-year-old has turned a bankruptcy-threatened restructuring case into a financially stable, debt-free second division club that was able to generate consistently positive results even during the pandemic. Before his job at SSV Jahn Regensburg, the native of Baden-Württemberg worked, among other things, as a strategy consultant for professional sports organizations and as professor and dean of studies for sports management at the SRH University of Heidelberg.
