Concert was part of the pan-European ARTE orchestra project “9 symphonies, 9 cities”
Vienna (OTS) – Yesterday, on Sunday, June 6th, 2021, ORF III Kultur und Information and ARTE hosted one of the first open-air concert events of this season – the “Great Classic Open Air” in front of Belvedere Palace. Camilla Nylund, Piotr Beczała, Patricia Nolz and Ryan Speedo Green performed together with the Wiener Symphoniker and the Wiener Singverein under the baton of Karina Canellakis Ludwig van Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony. ORF cultural lady Barbara Rett hosted the TV evening on ORF III and ARTE. While only 500 invited guests were allowed on site, more than 1.6 million people across Europe watched the glamorous music event from the Austrian capital. This was part of a pan-European ARTE orchestra project that played the composer’s nine symphonies all day in nine emblematic locations in Europe. The finale was the concert in Vienna, which ORF III and ARTE realized in cooperation with the City of Vienna and the Vienna Symphony Orchestra and simultaneously broadcast throughout Europe. Felix Breisach was responsible for the TV direction.

Among the 500 invited guests in the palace garden of the Belvedere were numerous heroes of the Corona crisis, for example from the nursing and health care sector as well as from retail, to whom this evening was dedicated. Ticket winners from ORF raffles as well as top-class representatives from culture, society and politics were also present. I.a. the ambassadors Li Xiaosi (People’s Republic of China) and Dmitrij Ljubinskij (Russian Federation), the President of the Constitutional Court Christoph Grabenwarter and Member of the National Council Maria Großbauer. The local art and culture scene was represented by the artistic directors Rudolf Buchbinder (Grafenegg) and Jan Nast (Vienna Symphony Orchestra), the general directors Stella Rollig (Belvedere Vienna), Johanna Rachinger (Austrian National Library) and Sabine Haag (Kunsthistorisches Museum Vienna), Wolfgang Bergmann, economic managing director Belvedere, art connoisseur and ORF III presenter Karl Hohenlohe as well as ORF III managing directors Eva Schindlauer and Peter Schöber. City Councilor for Culture Veronica Kaup-Hasler and ORF General Director Alexander Wrabetz welcomed the audience in the run-up to the concert.
