According to the UNAIDS report published today, people living with HIV are twice as likely to die from Covid-19 as the general population. Most of them did not have access to Covid-19 vaccines in mid-2021. People in sub-Saharan Africa are particularly affected. Two thirds (67 percent) of the people who are infected with HIV live there. Girls and young women in this region are hit particularly hard: Six out of seven new HIV infections among adolescents between the ages of 15 and 19 affect girls. This means that women and girls between the ages of 15 and 24 are twice as likely to be infected with HIV as boys and men. The German Foundation for World Population (DSW) draws attention to this with great concern.

“People who live with HIV have a particularly high risk of getting seriously ill with Covid-19. Therefore, it is all the more important that they are vaccinated against Covid-19. Because of the unfair distribution of the vaccines, the countries in which they are located Most people living with HIV are furthest behind when it comes to vaccinations. Chancellor Merkel should use her visit to US President Biden to take faster steps together towards greater vaccination fairness, “says Jan Kreutzberg, Managing Director of the German Foundation for World Population (DSW).
